Some stories arrive already carrying their own emotional architecture.The Emmas was one of those.

The short documentary I directed and edited for the American Kidney Fund tells the story of Emma and Emma, two young girls living in different states, connected by an ultra-rare kidney disease called cystinosis.

Finding the right funding for a documentary has always been harder than it should be. Opportunities are scattered across dozens of sites. Deadlines are easy to miss. Eligibility requirements are often buried in PDFs or half-updated web pages. And it is rarely obvious which grants are actually worth your time. To address that, I built the Documentary Funding Database: a free, searchable tool designed to help filmmakers discover, filter, and track documentary funding opportunities in one place.

When content relies on visuals that are tangential to the message, attention is borrowed rather than earned. The viewer arrives through familiarity or novelty, not curiosity. The promise of the image and the ask of the idea are misaligned.

We are asking people to care deeply, but training them to arrive shallow.
